7 Countries You Can Visit With a Schengen Visa

Already have a Schengen visa? Here's where else it can take you, and the rules to check before you book.

A Schengen visa takes paperwork, patience and a fair bit of money, so it feels wasteful to use it for a single trip. The good news: for Indian passport holders, it can quietly open several other countries too, some with no visa at all and some with a quick online step. Each one comes with small print, so here's what they actually ask for, with a link to the official page for every country.

The Short Answer

Country Entry Stay What your Schengen visa needs
Mexico Visa exemption 180 days Multiple-entry and previously used
Philippines Visa-free 30 days Valid and current
Georgia Visa-free 90 days Valid on the day you enter
Serbia Visa-free 90 days Multiple-entry, per the Serbian embassy in Delhi
Montenegro Visa exemption 30 days Valid
Taiwan Free online authorisation 30 days Valid, or expired less than 10 years ago
Turkey Online e-Visa 30 days Valid on the day you enter

One Rule Before Anything Else

Several of these countries only accept a multiple-entry visa, and some want one you have already used to enter the Schengen area. Others stop your stay on the day your visa expires. A single-entry visa for one Paris week may not work for everything below, so check the "what your visa needs" column before you book.

Mexico

  • Entry type: Visa exemption for tourism, business or transit
  • Stay: Up to 180 days, decided by immigration at entry
  • Conditions: The embassy's wording is "valid, multiple entry and previously used". A single-entry visa doesn't qualify, and neither does a Schengen visa you haven't used yet. Temporary residence cards are not covered.

The Philippines

  • Entry type: Visa-free. Indians can already enter for 14 days, and a Schengen visa extends that.
  • Stay: 30 days, not extendable and not convertible to another visa
  • Conditions: A valid Schengen visa or permanent residence permit, a passport valid six months beyond your stay, and a return or onward ticket

Georgia

  • Entry type: Visa-free
  • Stay: Up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • Conditions: A visa or residence permit from a country on Georgia's list, which includes the Schengen states. The rule asks for the visa to be valid when you arrive and doesn't state an entry type. Carry accommodation details and a return ticket.
  • Good to know: Georgia has introduced mandatory travel insurance for visitors, so confirm the current requirement before you fly.

Serbia

  • Entry type: Visa-free. Indian passport holders normally need a Serbian visa, and a Schengen visa removes that step.
  • Stay: Up to 90 days in a six-month period, and not beyond the expiry of your Schengen visa
  • Conditions: A valid Schengen visa. The Serbian embassy in New Delhi describes it as a visa "with multiple entries", so carry a multiple-entry one.

Montenegro

  • Entry type: Visa exemption
  • Stay: Up to 30 days, but no longer than your visa's expiry if that comes sooner
  • Conditions: A valid Schengen visa, or a valid US, UK or Irish visa. Residence permits from those countries also count.

Taiwan

  • Entry type: A free online ROC Travel Authorization Certificate. It isn't issued at the airport.
  • Stay: The latest page from Taiwan's office in India says 30 days from the day after arrival. Older pages say 14 days, so confirm which applies when you apply. The certificate itself is valid for 90 days.
  • Conditions: A Schengen visa that is valid, or expired less than 10 years before you arrive. Apply online before you fly.

Turkey

  • Entry type: An online single-entry e-Visa. Your Schengen visa makes you eligible for it, but doesn't replace it.
  • Stay: Up to 30 days
  • Conditions: A Schengen visa that is valid on the day you enter. The fee is shown on the official portal during your application, so check the amount there before paying.

What We Left Out

Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Many guides list both for Schengen holders. UAE's rules for Indians tie eligibility to residence permits in several cases. If you've seen a source that says otherwise, check the official page first.

The Western Balkans. Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Kosovo are often listed too, usually with stricter conditions such as a multiple-entry visa that has already been used. Once again, check the official pages first.

Three Combinations That Work

  • Serbia + Montenegro. Belgrade's river nights and then the bay at Kotor and Perast. Keep an eye on your visa's expiry date, since both stays end with it.
  • Georgia, slowly. Tbilisi, wine country and the mountains, with 90 days available if you want a longer stay.
  • Schengen + Turkey. A natural pairing for a longer Europe trip, with Istanbul at the end. Do the e-Visa at home before you leave.

Mexico and Taiwan work best as separate trips rather than add-ons. Already holding a Japan visa as well? See where else it can take you.

Questions We Get Asked

Does my Schengen visa need to be multiple-entry? For Mexico, yes, and it must have been used. For Serbia, the embassy says so. For Georgia, Montenegro and Turkey, the published rules ask for a valid visa and don't state an entry type, but we'd still carry the most flexible visa you have.

Can I use it after I've left the Schengen area? Yes, as long as it's still valid on the day you enter, and for Serbia and Montenegro your stay can't run past its expiry date.

Is a visa-free entry guaranteed? No. The border officer makes the final call, so carry your bookings, funds and onward ticket.
