Already have a Japan visa? Good news: it can take you a little further than Japan. For Indian passport holders, six other countries will either let you in on it or give you a longer stay because of it. Each comes with its own small print, so here's what they actually ask for, with a link to the official page for every one.

The Short Answer

Country Entry Stay Does a single-entry eVisa work?
Philippines Visa-free 30 days (14 without) Yes, a valid and current Japan visa is what's asked for
Georgia Visa-free 90 days in 180 Rule asks for a valid visa; no entry type stated
Taiwan Online authorisation 14 days Yes, valid or expired less than 10 years ago
Singapore Transit only Up to 96 hours Yes, with conditions below
Mexico Visa exemption Up to 180 days No. Needs multiple-entry and previously used
Montenegro Visa exemption Up to 30 days Unclear. Official pages conflict

A note on Japan's own visa: the permitted stay and number of entries are set by the visa Japan issues to you, not promised in advance. The eVisa for tourism is usually single-entry. Multiple-entry visas are issued at Japan's discretion, so don't plan around getting one.

The Philippines

  • Entry type: Indians can already enter visa-free for 14 days. The Japan visa isn't needed for entry, it earns you a longer stay.
  • Stay: 30 days, not extendable and not convertible to another visa
  • Conditions: Valid and current Japan visa, passport valid six months beyond your stay, and a return or onward ticket
  • Good to know: The 14-day route needs a six-month passport, confirmed accommodation, proof of funds and an onward ticket. With a valid Japan visa you can stay 30 days instead.

Georgia

  • Entry type: Visa-free
  • Stay: Up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • Conditions: A valid visa or residence permit from a listed country, which includes Japan. Carry accommodation details and a return ticket.
  • Official source: Georgia Migration Commission and Georgian consular services

Taiwan

  • Entry type: Free online ROC Travel Authorization Certificate. It isn't issued at the airport.
  • Stay: 14 days
  • Conditions: A Japan visa that is valid, or expired less than 10 years before you arrive. Apply online before you fly. Carry a passport valid for six months, proof of your Japan entry and a confirmed onward ticket.

Singapore (Transit Only)

  • Entry type: The Visa Free Transit Facility. This is not a tourist entry.
  • Stay: Up to 96 hours, with no extension
  • Conditions: A valid Japan visa with at least one month's validity from the day you enter Singapore, and an onward air, ferry or cruise ticket departing within 96 hours. ICA officers make the final call at the border.
  • Good to know: It applies when you're in transit to or from any third country, not only between India and Japan. Single-journey visas have a specific exception: you can use the facility on the return leg after the visa is used, if you travel directly back home through Singapore and haven't returned home since.

Mexico

  • Entry type: Visa exemption
  • Stay: Up to 180 days, decided at entry
  • Conditions: A valid, multiple-entry, previously used Japan visa, and a passport valid for at least six months. A single-entry eVisa doesn't qualify, and neither does a Japan visa you haven't used yet.

Montenegro

  • Entry type: Visa exemption, if it applies to you
  • Stay: Up to 30 days
  • The conflict: Montenegro's general visa guidance lists Japan visa holders. Its India-specific page lists Schengen, US, UK and Irish visas, and doesn't mention Japan.
  • What we'd do: Confirm with the Montenegrin embassy in writing before you book anything non-refundable.

What About the UAE?

Many guides list it, and we left it out. The UAE's entry visa for Indian nationals requires a valid Japanese residence permit, not a tourist visa. The official ICP announcement says so plainly.

Three Combinations That Work

  • Japan + Taiwan. A short hop, a free certificate you can sort out at home, and two food cultures that suit each other.
  • Japan + Singapore. The easiest add-on, since it fits inside the journey you're already making. Our Singapore family itinerary shows how much four days can hold.
  • Japan + Philippines. Up to 30 days, which makes a beach chapter after the cities easy to plan.

Mexico, Georgia and Montenegro are possible, but they are really separate trips rather than natural extensions of a Japan holiday. Planning Japan? Our 7-10 day Tokyo and Osaka itinerary is a good place to start.

Questions We Get Asked

Can I use a single-entry Japan eVisa? For the Philippines, Taiwan and Singapore, yes, under the conditions above. For Mexico, no. For Georgia the rule doesn't specify an entry type, and for Montenegro the guidance is unclear.

Must I visit Japan before going elsewhere? Only for Mexico, which requires a previously used visa. Singapore's transit facility can be used before or after Japan, within its conditions.

Can I stop in Singapore on the way to Japan? Yes, if your Japan visa has at least a month's validity from the day you enter Singapore and you hold an onward ticket leaving within 96 hours.

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond your return
  • Onward or return tickets for each leg
  • Taiwan certificate applied for, if Taiwan is on your route
  • If your Japan visa is an eVisa, a phone that can show the official issuance notice. Japan doesn't accept a printout, PDF or screenshot
