A suitcase is useful until you’re steering it through a busy station, searching for a lift, or wondering whether a sightseeing detour is worth hauling it along. In Japan, you can send that suitcase ahead and make the journey with a small bag instead.

Luggage forwarding connects airports, hotels, and other supported destinations through parcel delivery networks. You’ll often see it called takuhaibin, or takkyubin—a name associated with Yamato Transport’s TA-Q-BIN service. For travelers visiting several cities, it can make moving between stops considerably easier. Japan’s luggage delivery guide

Imagine an itinerary that runs from Tokyo to Hakone and then Kyoto. Instead of taking everything to your overnight stop, you could send your main suitcase directly to your Kyoto hotel and pack a smaller bag for Hakone. Confirm the delivery date and the hotel’s willingness to receive it before handing it over.

Several providers offer services worth considering:

For a hotel stay, start by asking reception whether they can arrange forwarding. Their available carrier and collection schedule may make the choice straightforward.

The cost depends on your route, luggage dimensions, weight, and delivery service. As a concrete example, Yamato’s published Haneda Airport–to–Tokyo standard delivery prices list ¥1,730 for size 120, ¥2,090 for size 140, and ¥2,410 for size 160. Its advertised same-day price for a size-160 bag is ¥5,170. These are route-specific examples; check the current quote for your journey. Yamato airport delivery prices

The size number refers to the combined length, width, and height in centimeters, with corresponding weight limits. A suitcase measuring 75 × 50 × 30 cm totals 155 cm, placing it in the size-160 bracket if it also meets that bracket’s weight limit. Yamato sizing guide

Allow time for your luggage to travel. Yamato says standard delivery generally takes one or two days, depending on the destination. Confirm the arrival date for your exact route and drop-off time before making plans around it. Delivery timing

Same-day delivery is available on selected routes, but it has specific coverage and cutoffs. A service advertised at an airport does not mean every hotel is eligible or that bags arriving on an evening flight will reach the hotel that night. Same-day airport delivery conditions

To arrange a shipment:

  1. Confirm the receiving hotel’s policy. Ask whether it accepts forwarded luggage and how early it can receive yours.
  2. Prepare the destination details. Have the hotel’s name, address, telephone number, reservation name, and check-in date ready.
  3. Confirm the price and arrival date. Make sure the bag will reach you while you are still staying there.
  4. Complete the label and arrange payment. Ask staff to help check the details.
  5. Keep the receipt and tracking number. Photograph the label so you have a backup.

If you’re staying at an apartment or a property without reception, check delivery arrangements carefully. Yamato’s airport service requires someone to receive the luggage; it suggests a Yamato sales office for collection when the accommodation is unstaffed. Check that office’s opening hours before choosing it. Destination requirements

Pack your small bag before handing over the suitcase. Keep your passport, wallet, medication, valuables, chargers, toiletries, and enough clothes for the confirmed delivery interval, plus a little extra. Think through what you’ll need that evening and the following morning.

The return flight needs particular attention. For Yamato Airport TA-Q-BIN, luggage must generally be sent at least two days before departure, or three days from some areas. Confirm the exact shipping deadline, terminal, and collection counter. You collect the bag on your departure date, so leave time to retrieve it before airline check-in. Airport shipping instructions

You don’t need to forward your suitcase at every stop. Choose the journey where carrying it would be most inconvenient: a transfer with several trains, a short side trip, or a sightseeing day between hotels. With the delivery arranged and your essentials on your shoulder, that travel day can include a leisurely lunch or an extra walk before check-in.
