A romantic New Year is less about doing more and more about being unhurried. Time to linger over breakfast, a sunset that does not have a schedule attached, and a 31 December dinner that feels special without being a production.

Start with the pace you want
Couples usually fall into one of three camps. Some want to do almost nothing in a beautiful place. Some want a beach base with a few outings. Some want good food, a little history and long walks. Each of our three destinations matches one of these.

Maldives: choose the transfer before the villa
The Maldives is the classic romantic answer, but the practical question is how you reach your resort. Some are a short speedboat ride from the airport; others need a seaplane, and seaplanes only operate in daylight. If your flight lands in the evening, a far-flung resort can mean an extra night in Malé. For an easy trip, we favour resorts reached by speedboat, and our guide explains how to compare them.
Krabi: one hotel, a few good days out
The Tourism Authority of Thailand points to the Andaman coast as a good choice for December. We suggest a single mainland base rather than island-hopping, with one optional boat outing and plenty of free afternoons. That keeps luggage, packing and logistics light, which is the point of the series.
Galle coast: food, heritage and easy evenings
For couples who like wandering, a base near Galle gives you the old Fort, cafes, beaches and long dinners without much planning. Sri Lanka Tourism lists November to March as a favourable season for the south-west coast. The airport transfer is a road journey of a couple of hours, which we describe honestly in our guide before calling anything easy.
What makes New Year different for two
- Book the 31 December dinner early. Many resorts include a festive dinner and charge a supplement for it. Ask what it costs and what it covers.
- Decide whether you want a party or a quiet night. Noise levels vary a lot between hotels, even in the same town.
- Allow a buffer day at each end. Peak-season flights are busy, and a missed connection is easier to absorb when your first night is not prepaid and tightly timed.
