New Year 2027 with Family: Easy Holidays from India
Three relaxed international New Year holidays from India for families: Dubai, Singapore and Sri Lanka's west coast, compared on journey, pace and packing.
A family New Year holiday works best when it asks very little of everyone. Fewer hotel changes, shorter days, a room you are glad to return to, and enough slack that a tired six-year-old or a grandparent who needs a slower morning does not unravel the plan.
This is the first in a short series, Pack Light, Start Fresh, on New Year 2027 holidays from India that are easy to organise and easy to enjoy. Here we compare three places that suit families, so you can pick a direction before worrying about dates and prices.
How we judge an “easy” family trip
A short flight does not make a trip easy. We look at the whole journey: connections, what time you land, how long it takes to reach the hotel, what you need to arrange before you fly, and how much luggage you will move. Then we ask a simple question: if you stay in one place for five nights, will everyone still be happy on night four?
That is why every itinerary in this series uses one hotel base and about four to six nights. You can always add more. It is much harder to take a rushed itinerary apart halfway through.
The three options at a glance
| Dubai | Singapore | Sri Lanka (west coast) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suits families who want | Reliable infrastructure, indoor and outdoor options, a big city to dip into | Compact, well organised, plenty for school-age children, easy to get around | Beach days, slower mornings, good food, a gentler pace for grandparents |
| Main compromise | Crowds and road closures on 31 December | December is a wetter month, so you need rain plans | A road transfer from the airport, and sea conditions that need care |
| Suggested stay | 5 nights, one base | 5 nights, one base | 5 nights, one beach base |
| Pace | Big days, then pool time | One main activity a day | Slow, flexible, beach-led |

Dubai: when you want everything close and organised
December is the comfortable season in Dubai, with warm days and evenings cool enough to be outdoors. It suits families who like having choices: aquariums, beaches, malls with plenty of seating and food, and a metro that makes moving around less stressful than a car in traffic.
The trade-off is New Year’s Eve itself. The big celebration districts get busy, roads close and getting back to your hotel with tired children can take longer than the dinner. A hotel you can walk home to, or a quiet evening by your own resort, is often the happier plan.
Singapore: when you want one thing a day and no stress
Singapore is easy to read: clean, compact, clearly signed, with transport that is straightforward even with a stroller. It suits school-age children well because each day can have one clear highlight, such as the gardens, the zoo and wildlife parks, or Sentosa.
The honest caveat is weather. The Meteorological Service Singapore notes that November to January is the wetter part of the year, so we plan an indoor alternative for every outdoor highlight and pack for rain. Showers usually pass; a plan with no backup does not.
Sri Lanka’s west coast: when you want beach time and a gentler pace
Sri Lanka Tourism lists November to March as a good season for the island’s south-west beaches, and a base around Bentota gives you sand, a calm resort rhythm and optional outings such as river boat rides and turtle hatcheries. It works well for multi-generational groups who want to relax together.
There are two honest compromises. First, the airport to the coast is a road journey of a couple of hours, which matters if you land late or travel with small children. Second, sea conditions vary by day and by beach, so we recommend swimming where hotels and lifeguards advise, rather than assuming any stretch of water is safe. We deliberately leave a full island circuit out of this holiday.
How to choose between them
- Children under about seven, or a stroller: Singapore or Dubai, where transfers are short and everything is paved.
- Grandparents travelling with you: Sri Lanka for pace, Dubai for infrastructure. Check stairs, lifts and walking distances at your hotel.
- Teenagers: Dubai and Singapore have more to occupy them; Sri Lanka works if they enjoy the beach and water.
- Looking for fireworks on 31 December: Decide in advance whether you want the crowd or a quieter view from your hotel.
Before you decide
Entry rules depend on your passport and change from time to time, so check the official source for each country. Our guide to finding authentic visa rules shows you where to look.
Over the coming weeks we will publish a detailed guide for each destination, then a comparison of the whole series and a packing checklist. Couples planning a romantic escape can start with our companion guide, published on 30 October.
Planning note: we put this guide together in October 2026. Flights, entry rules, festive events and hotel offers change, so we will re-check the details in December. Treat anything dated or priced as something to confirm before you book.
Tell us your departure city, dates, who is travelling and your children’s ages, and we will help you shape a family New Year plan that fits.
