Jeju Is Visa-Free for Indians, But Only If You Fly In Directly

Indian travellers can visit Jeju visa-free for up to 30 days. Here’s how to route through an overseas hub, avoid the Seoul connection trap and prepare for entry.

For Indian-passport holders planning a holiday. Official guidance checked on 19 October 2026.

Jeju makes a lovely case for slowing down: waves against dark volcanic rock, green cliffs and an afternoon with nowhere urgent to be. For Indian travellers, there is another reason to put it on the shortlist: a visa exemption for a stay of up to 30 days.

But before you save the seaside hotel, open the flight details. The route you book decides whether you can use that exemption.

The Korean consulate in Mumbai confirms that you must arrive in Jeju directly from outside South Korea and stay within Jeju for the duration of your visit. A connection through Seoul does not qualify under this scheme. Read the consulate’s Jeju entry notice.

Connecting from India? Use a hub outside South Korea, then fly straight to Jeju. You cannot use Jeju’s visa exemption to transfer through Seoul onto a domestic Jeju flight.

What “direct to Jeju” actually means

It does not mean your entire journey must be one nonstop flight from India. It means the flight bringing you into South Korea must arrive at Jeju International Airport (CJU) from overseas, without a stop elsewhere in Korea.

For a connecting itinerary from India, plan the journey through a third-country hub, such as Singapore, or another hub outside South Korea, such as Hong Kong. Your onward flight must go straight to Jeju. The Korean embassy’s guidance explicitly allows overseas connections and excludes itineraries through Seoul or Busan. See the embassy’s route examples.

These examples show the routing principle, not a guarantee of boarding or admission. Check every flight segment in both directions.

Why “just transferring in Seoul” does not work

A flight from Seoul to Jeju is a domestic journey. Arriving at Incheon and continuing to Jeju, including an itinerary that requires an airport change to Gimpo, is not the overseas-to-Jeju arrival required by the exemption.

For an ordinary Jeju holiday routed through Seoul, arrange a Korean visa before travelling. A short layover or a single booking does not make that route eligible. The Korean embassy specifically addresses and rejects Incheon-to-Jeju connections under this scheme. Read its transit FAQ.

International airside transit and Korea’s separate conditional transit-entry programmes have their own rules. They are not a general workaround for this holiday route. If you think you qualify independently, verify your exact circumstances with Korean immigration before booking; India’s embassy also advises checking uncertain transit cases with the Korean mission. See the Indian embassy’s Korean transit advisory.

Two overseas connections to investigate

Via Singapore

Scoot lists Singapore–Jeju flights, making Singapore a route to investigate from your Indian departure city. Select an onward service that flies nonstop to Jeju and check the schedule for your dates.

Ask the airlines whether your bags will be checked through and whether you can obtain your onward boarding pass without clearing immigration. Singapore’s immigration authority says passengers who must enter to collect baggage or check in again are not airside transit travellers. Check Singapore’s transit guidance.

If your connection requires entry into Singapore, Indian ordinary-passport holders generally need a Singapore visa unless they independently meet an applicable exemption. Do not assume a layover automatically qualifies for the conditional Visa-Free Transit Facility. Check the requirements for Indian travellers.

Via Hong Kong

HK Express lists Hong Kong–Jeju flights. Check the India–Hong Kong connection, baggage arrangements and onward check-in before combining tickets.

Indian travellers staying entirely within Hong Kong’s airport transit area do not need Pre-arrival Registration (PAR). If you need to enter Hong Kong, eligible Indian visitors generally need successful PAR for a visa-free visit of up to 14 days, unless exempt. An unsuccessful registration is not permission to enter. Read Hong Kong Immigration’s PAR FAQ.

With either hub, leave enough connection time for the ticket arrangement you actually have. A flight-search result combining two airlines does not, by itself, confirm baggage transfer or a protected connection.

Visa-free still comes with entry checks

India’s embassy in Seoul issued a Jeju-specific advisory on 24 February 2026 after reports of travellers being refused entry. It confirms that immigration officers decide admission and that the waiver does not guarantee it. The advisory asks travellers to carry printed documentation, not only phone screenshots. Read the Jeju travel advisory.

Prepare:

  • A passport with at least six months’ validity.
  • A confirmed return flight ticket.
  • Hotel bookings covering the whole stay, with accommodation contact details.
  • A day-by-day itinerary you can explain.
  • Evidence of sufficient money, such as recent bank statements, international cards or foreign currency.

The embassy strongly recommends travel insurance too. Keep your answers at immigration truthful and consistent with your holiday plans.

Do Indians need K-ETA or an arrival card?

Indian ordinary-passport holders are not on the K-ETA eligible-country list. The Korean embassy’s Jeju guidance places eligible nationalities outside that list and the excluded-country group in the category that can enter Jeju without a visa or K-ETA. This does not grant access to mainland Korea. Check the embassy’s eligibility table.

The arrival declaration is separate. Use the official Korea e-Arrival Card website to check your requirements and submit the free declaration within the permitted window, starting three days before arrival. Have your passport, flight and accommodation details ready. An arrival card is not a visa or entry approval.

Before you book, check the journey home

Under the Jeju-only exemption, your stay must remain within Jeju. A return ticket via Seoul cannot be treated as an ordinary extension of that permission. Plan an international departure from Jeju to an overseas hub, then continue to India. The consulate’s stay restriction applies throughout the visit.

Save the complete itinerary, confirm transit arrangements with the operating airlines and recheck the official guidance before payment and departure. Once those details are settled, you can get back to the pleasant decisions: the sea view, the long lunch and how much room to leave for doing very little.
